Focusing on the "Dream" in Dream to Learn

POSTED IN: My DTL blog: Chris' blog

I had a great conversation with Benjamin Tauber last week that got me thinking about the 'aspirational' dimension of Dream to Learn.  From the beginning, Dream to Learn has never been about just the acquisition of knowledge; it's also been focused on the development and growth of the people who use it.  As one of our tag lines put it, "Dream to Learn is about being and becoming."

But our message has been muddy -- we weren't showing our first-time visitors clearly and simply that Dream to Learn is a community of people who learn and grow together.

And so we've been focusing this past week on the "Dream" in Dream to Learn.

I'm using "Dream" here in the sense of "having a goal" or "aspiring to", as in "I dream of being a concert pianist".

How can we show (and not just "tell") that Dream to Learn is for people who have dreams?

There are two parts to the answer.

First, we put our own dreams front and center.

If you come to https://dreamtolearn.com as a guest (if you're not logged in) on the landing page you'll now see a scrolling display of a selection of our members' dreams.

Second, we give visitors the opportunity to explore and share their dreams

From the same landing page that shows our members dreams, you can click on the "your dreams wizard" button, which takes you straight to a wizard to explore your own dreams (with some light guidance).  You don't need to sign in to use the wizard, but if you decide you want to save your dreams, you can sign in or sign up and carry your dreams through into Dream to Learn.

It's early going on these new "Dream" features, but look for more in coming weeks on what defines our users.

We're building Dream to Learn because we believe there is a need for a social learning platform that brings together people who share dreams to learn and grow.
