Dream to Learn is shutting down...

We are very sorry to say that Dream to Learn will be shutting down as of December 28th, 2019. If you have content that you wish to keep, you should make a copy of it before that date.

from Hangouts to Skype

POSTED IN: My DTL blog: Chris' blog

It's been a good long while since I posted.  I've been busy during that time.  I've been coding some, with a lot more coding since the start of the new year.  But I also moved from France back to the US (to Eugene, Oregon), and got married.  My wife Giuditta is from Italy -- she was a professor of Italian in Grenoble, and we met in a climbing class.  She just got her green card this past week.

There have been a lot of developments with Dream to Learn, and I'll be posting about them over the coming weeks and months.  Today I want to talk about Google Hangouts and Skype.

Google Hangouts were great for Dream to Learn.  While the UI was a bit clunky, they had a great set of APIs that allowed us to integrate with Dream to Learn.  Then Google suddenly announced that they were ditching support for the APIs:

So all of our work in support of Hangouts gets thrown in the trash.  Will Google ever settle on a consistent social medial strategy and actually stick with it?

So we're going to use Skype instead.  For the moment, Skype has a less rich set of APIs.  But come April 25, 2017, when Google turns off the Hangout APIs, Skype will be the winner.

We've already implemented a "Skype Call" button in Dream to Learn, that lets you call your colleagues on Skype with one click.  You can manage who can see your Skype username, and who can call you, and block individual users from being able to call you if you wish.  Look for more Skype integration points going forward.
