I'm pleased to welcome Valerie Gonzalez as the second member of our Dream to Learn advisory board. Val graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in chemistry, and then went on apprentice with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto. She became a Resident Artist at the COC, and went on to sing professionally in opera theaters throughout Canada, and in the USA and Europe.
Some of the many roles she has sung professionally include Blondchen in Mozart’s DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL, Norina in Donizetti's DON PASQUALE and Oscar in Verdi's UN BALLO IN MASCHERA with Pacific Opera Victoria, the Title Role in LE COQ D’OR with L'Opera de Nice, Olympia in Offenbach'’s LES CONTES D’HOFFMAN with L'Opera Montreal, Barbarina and Susanna in Mozart's LE NOZZE DI FIGARO with the Canadian Opera Company (COC) touring production. She performed Esmeralda in Smetana’'s THE BARTERED BRIDE numerous times, with companies such as L'Opera de Geneve, and also appeared as Papagena in Mozart's DIE ZAUBERFLOTE at Opera Lyra in Ottawa, both roles which she also performed with the Canadian Opera Company.
After the birth of her first child, she retired from the opera stage, and started up her own private studio, which she nostalgically named Viva La Diva Music Studio. Valerie continues the Diva tradition, presenting concerts with her husband, Craig Ketter, the esteemed New York pianist, as well as training a young generation of pianists and singers to be divas in their own right. Currently, she is preparing a book of poetry for publishing, and is working on two separate novels.
I've known Valerie for many years. Like Dan Senter, she's a generalist who will provide us with opinions and guidance on a whole range of questions. She also brings a tremendous creative passion, not least for everything to do with singing, including vocal technique. You can find Val's blog here.
Welcome to the team, Val!
